East Coast RC, located in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia hosted its inaugural race with close to 40 drivers last weekend. Terengganu, famous worldwide for its beautiful clear water island, stayed sunny and dry though out the race giving racers a clean, blue groove track. Qualifying was based on the fastest heat out of four which saw local driver Kelvin Yong (Kyosho/Novarossi/AKA) pip guest driver Christian Jones (Kyosho/OS/AKA) of Australia for the TQ spot. The 35 minutes Semis B was dominated by Daniel Law (Losi/Picco/JConcepts). Semis A presented more action with TQ Kelvin leading the pack for half the race with Gan Boon Huat (Hongnor/RB/AKA) and Chan Kim Hoi (Xray/Reds/Sweep) hot in pursuit. A flame out dropped Kelvin to 3rd position which he eventually qualified at for the finals. Gan Boon Huat won Semis A and qualified for pole position with Chan Kim Hoi in 2nd respectively.
The finals started under very hot sunny conditions with Gan Boon Huat and Kelvin blasting off from the starting line and pulling a half lap lead over the rest of the field after 2 laps. Unfortunately, a flame out just after the 2nd refuel dropped Kelvin back to 7th position. Daniel eventually took over the lead with David Aw (Hongnor/RB/James), Gan Boon Huat and young Andy Lee (Agama/Alpha/Beta) hot on his heels. Kelvin eventually managed to catch up but a 2nd flame out ruined any chances of challenging and he eventually finished 5th overall.
Overall, it was a very successful inaugural race for East Coast RC and track owner and wonderful host Tommy Han was very please and took the opportunity to thank all drivers for the support. The huge lucky draw event ended the weekend with smiles on every drivers face and we look forward to another weekend in the sun at the East Coast RC Track.
